RAF Sergeant Michelle Turner has a heart condition which causes exhaustion, extreme dizziness and unannounced collapses. As a result she had confined herself to her house, embarrassed by the inevitability of collapsing in public. But she overcame that fear to attend Invictus Games training camps and has been selected to compete in rowing, powerlifting and swimming - sports which could be dangerous given her condition but has made her all the more determined to continue. Michelle said: “I was a broken girl when I walked into the first Invictus 2017 training camp; a far cry from the strong, confident RAF Sgt I was before I became ill. Slowly but surely, camp by camp, I remembered that girl I once was. Nothing has changed with my symptoms but my whole mind set and confidence has dramatically increased. Why would I dive into a swimming pool knowing I could be unconscious at any second? Surely I’d drown? At the training camps I swam because at Invictus they teach me that I can and keep me completely safe. I got out of that pool so damn proud and happy. I'm on a journey that is making me do things I never thought I’d do again…but with the help and support of Invictus I can!”
