Race across America 2017

In 2017 a Help for Heroes team of eight wounded, injured and sick veterans and service personnel will take on one of the world’s toughest endurance cycling events, the epic 3,081 mile Race Across America (RAAM). Please support the team as they prepare to push themselves to the limit both physically and mentally in the pursuit of finishing the RAAM in under seven days.

The RAAM is the world’s preeminent and longest running endurance cycling race and is considered by many to be the one of the world’s toughest endurance cycling events. Starting in Oceanside, California competitors pass through 12 states, covering over 3,081 miles and climb in excess of 170,000 feet before finishing in Annapolis, Maryland.

In 2012, a Help for Heroes team of eight Wounded, Injured and Sick (WIS) veterans and service personnel took on RAAM. Finishing the race in a time of seven days, seven hours and 38 minutes, their epic journey captured the hearts of the nation and inspired many other WIS to take up cycling as a sports recovery activity.

To celebrate the 5th anniversary of RAAM 2012 and the 10th anniversary of Help for Heroes, the charity intends to enter a second team of eight WIS in the RAAM. Their goal is to beat the previous time set in 2012 and complete the RAAM in under seven days. This will be no small feat as the team will have to maintain an average speed of over 18.3 mph covering a minimum of 440 miles a day! This will push riders to their limits both physically and mentally. However this is just the sort of challenge which many of our WIS yearn for in order to prove themselves once again.

In summary, RAAM 2017 represents a unique opportunity to give those selected a sense of purpose and to be part of a team of likeminded individuals striving for the achievement of a specific a goal. Therefore, what better way to show your support than by sponsoring the Help for Heroes team to take on one of the longest and toughest endurance cycling events in the world.
