Three friends from Dudley have set themselves an incredible challenge – to complete the 96-mile Highland Way in three days, and then climb Ben Nevis. And they are doing it to raise funds to support veterans in their community.

Jaden Downer and Will Edwards, both aged 19, and Ryan Foster, aged 22, met five years ago while watching Wolverhampton Wanderers FC. They enjoy hiking in their spare time, but decided earlier this year that they wanted to take on more of a challenge and do something for a good cause, Help for Heroes.

The three have friends and family members who have served in the armed forces. Jaden, who is organising the challenge and hopes to join the Army this year, said, “We know that for some veterans and their families, the toughest battles can come after service. We wanted to do something to show our support.”

Ryan explained, “We’d heard about the Highland Way route, which stretches from Glasgow to Fort William. Most people complete it in five days, but we thought we’d set ourselves more of a challenge. We’ll need to complete about 33 miles each day before we do the 3,900-foot climb up Ben Nevis.”

Will added, “We’re going to be Wild Camping, so will be carrying all our equipment with us as well. We reckon we’ll need to walk for 10-12 hours a day – and then Ben Nevis will take another eight hours.”

They’ve been training at their local gym to get ready and are aiming to raise £1,000 to support veterans. They are being sponsored by People Solutions.

Graham Hudspith is an Ambassador for Help for Heroes for the West Midlands area. He said, “What these young men are taking on is incredible. It will take their hiking skills and friendship to another level.

“I’d like to thank them for thinking of our veterans who have been through so much and who will easily relate to the challenge they’re about to undertake. It is people like them that keep the Charity going, supporting the wounded, injured and sick throughout their lives once discharged from service.”

If you would like to show your support for Jaden, Will and Ryan, which starts on Thursday 22 October, go to Highland Way Challenge.
