On Friday evening 19 wonderful but apprehensive Band of Sisters members arrived at the Help for Heroes run Tedworth House Recovery Centre for a long awaited weekend of respite and relaxation.
For most, this was the first opportunity they have had to meet others living through similar experiences and so the weekend’s activities were designed to create opportunities for mutual support, bonding and lasting fellowship.
An informal dinner at the house on Friday night provided the perfect foundation for the weekend and after a sociable couple of glasses of wine, lemonade or cups of tea many of the Band of Sisters decided a rare early night was in store – a good night sleep in a comfy bed with nothing to wake or worry them! A luxury that many could not resist!
Saturday began with a relaxed breakfast where members could enjoy a cooked breakfast and a cup of tea whilst having a chat or reading a book without any interruptions or washing up. The main activity for the morning was bracelet making which attendees were able to dip in and out of to indulge in manicures, massages and make us sessions. This ‘me time’ is incredibly rare for these often unsung heroes and it was a real treat for the Band of Sisters team to watch members begin to unwind.
Lunch was followed by an art class, drumming workshop, Zumba and the option for some free time or use of the gym and sauna and steam room at the Recovery Centre.
Having had the opportunity to get to know each other a little better, Saturday night’s dinner and pub quiz provided many giggles as some members let their hair down for the first time in a long time!
After a-not-quite-so early night, Sunday morning offered yoga and brunch, the perfect way to wind down after a busy weekend and a chance to reflect on the experience.
We so hope that all our Band of Sisters members enjoyed the weekend as much as we did and we have thoroughly enjoyed reading all the feedback we have received so far:
“Just wanted to say a big THANK YOU to everyone involved in the organising and planning of the weekend break. It was thoroughly enjoyable and some very lovely people. The staff were all very welcoming and very helpful and do a wonderful job. All I can say, because I'm a little lost for words, is that it was most appreciated and I will never forget it. Thank you again you should be very pleased with the hard work you have all put in to make this happen.”
