Injured veteran joins local celebrities to launch Cardiff to London Hero Ride

Posted by: Help For Heroes | Categories: General

Help for Heroes Ambassador Matt Lum, local singer/songwriter Nick Pendry and well-known TV doctor Dawn Harper today led the launch of the Cardiff to London Hero Ride 2014 at Cardiff Castle, encouraging the great British public to sign up to take part in the biggest cycling event in support of our wounded heroes the country has ever seen.

The Cardiff to London Hero Ride, known as the Dragon Dash, will start from Cardiff Castle and covers 170 miles in total between 5 – 8 June. The launch today at Cardiff Castle coincided with the national launch of Hero Ride 2014 at the EDF Energy London Eye, with the aim to raise £1.5 million.

Matt Lum is a member of the Help for Heroes Band of Brothers and is joining the Hero Ride to cycle alongside fundraisers. Matt, a veteran who suffered severe injury while on exercise, served eight years in the Royal Engineers.

Matt Lum, Help for Heroes Ambassador; “When I was given the opportunity to take part in the Hero Ride I knew I had to do it. It means a great deal to me to be able to give something back to this amazing Charity without which I honestly don’t know where I would be today.  On a personal level it has also given me something to focus on and all the training is really helping to improve my general wellbeing. I am looking forward to meeting and riding with many different people, making some new friends and hopefully helping out in any way I can.”

Dr Dawn Harper; TV presenter; “I’m really looking forward to doing my bit. We owe our Servicemen and women so much; we can only begin to imagine the experience they have been through. It’s time to saddle up and show our support and I’m no athlete so if I can do it, anyone can! See you at the start in Cardiff in June!”

Nick Pendry, local musician; “It’s a fantastic cause and touches home with me as my father has served in Afghanistan. What started as a concert for the residents at Tedworth House Recovery Centre has somehow escalated into me also doing a 170 cycle ride from my home town Cardiff to London! Come and join me on the Dragon Dash.”
