Veterans' carers enjoy a tasty treat at chocolate workshop

A group of carers supported by Help for Heroes enjoyed a well-earned break at a chocolate-making workshop in Livingston recently.

The group took part in the Getting Gooey Chocolate Making Workshop, in Livingston Business Centre, making beautiful individual chocolates, strawberries and chocolate bark using Belgian milk, white and dark chocolate.

Gerry McGregor, Help for Heroes’ Band of Brothers/Sisters Coordinator Scotland, said: “It was a fun, not to mention messy, event where our veterans’ loved ones could take a break, relax, unwind and enjoy themselves for a few hours. There were plenty of laughs and a real feel good afternoon. The whole afternoon was a real highlight – everyone wants to do it again and take part in some of the other workshops.”

Doreen Hornall, whose husband Alex has been supported by Help for Heroes, said: ‘”It was a brilliant workshop making chocolates and having a laugh.”

Help for Heroes provides lifelong support to service personnel, veterans and their families as they rebuild their lives after injuries and illness sustained while serving or as a result of their time in the British Armed Forces.

The Help for Heroes Band of Brothers fellowship network is available to veterans and service personnel who have suffered a permanently life-limiting or career-ending injury or illness during or attributable to their service. The Help for Heroes Band of Sisters is available to their loved ones.

Both networks are free, confidential and offer lifelong access to all the financial and welfare support from Help for Heroes as well as providing opportunities to meet others who are living through similar experiences. There are around 500 members in Scotland.

Anyone who has served in the UK armed forces and needs support can find out more here or contacting Help for Heroes Recovery Centre North, which covers Scotland, on 01748 834148.
