Sergeant Gareth Paterson was diagnosed with Ankylosing Spondylitis in 2004, a form of spinal arthritis. As a result he suffers from chronic pain and stiffness, which can leave him confined to his bed. He also lives with anxiety and depression. Gareth came away from the 2016 Invictus Games with a new sense of purpose and belonging. Returning this year to compete in archery, he aims to harness the power of sport once more to take another step forward on his recovery journey. “The Invictus Games allows me to be a part of a team who want to show the world that, no matter how big or small your impairment, you can represent not only your country but yourself. The 2016 Invictus Games had a profound effect on me. It pushed me outside my comfort zone and allowed me to prove to myself that I am not beaten.”
