Former Lance Corporal Richard Gamble served in the British Army until he was medically discharged in 2015: “Since being medically discharged, and suffering from my injuries on a daily basis, I have found it hard to keep focused on the positives in life and for some time it affected my mental health.” The 27-year-old from Hythe, Kent credits sport and the Invictus Games in assisting his ongoing recovery journey: “Prior to the Games, I suffered with depression and anxiety due to the chronic leg pain I suffer with, I had no support network only that of my immediate family. The Invictus journey has made me feel motivated and empowered which is something I have not felt since being medically discharged. The Invictus programme has made me feel much more positive about my injuries, and that I am not the only one on the hard road to recovery. Since attending the first training camp I have already met some amazing people, it has opened up new doors and chapters in my life that I will endeavour to carry on with after Sydney. The Games have given me the focus and drive to succeed for myself and for the team. Empowering one another there is a life to live even after the obstacles we have faced, and that we are still unstoppable.”
