Paul Wilson | ACHIEVE

Categories: Arch To Arc

Paul, 31, served with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, 2nd Royal Tank Regiment. He developed PTSD after a tour of Afghanistan in 2010/11: “I got involved with Help for Heroes at the start of 2014. At the time I wasn’t leaving the house and was taking quite regular overdoses – I had been in intensive care after trying to take my life. Help for Heroes started to get me out of the house and then I found their Sports Recovery Programme.

I took part in the Help for Heroes Team True Spirit triathlon events and the Invictus Games last year, competing in archery. It has transformed my life, it’s been better than any medication, it’s incredible. Since 2013 I was really suffering, I was constantly saying to my wife, there’s no way out, there’s no help for me. And then probably within months of starting the work with Help for Heroes, my life was turned around. Really it’s thanks to everyone that fundraises, so thank you.”

As well as archery, Paul enjoys running and cycling and hopes that experience will carry into Arch to Arc, along with the fantastic team spirit he received in the Sports Recovery programme.
