Former RAF Sergeant Michael ‘Westy’ Westwell has used sport as a focus both mentally and physically since his injury. He competed in the Invictus Games in 2016 and has now forged a career in sport having qualified as a PE teacher. In Toronto, he will compete in cycling, rowing, sitting volleyball and athletics. Michael said: “Invictus is a light at the end of the tunnel in what seems to be an ever increasingly long road to recovery. I hope to be a role model, inspiring other Service Personnel going through similar situations. Being part of the UK Team will infuse a huge sense of pride and honour knowing that I am representing my country in such a worthwhile and prestigious event. Not only will it benefit me both physically and psychologically but it will also give my family and the children I teach an insight into the world of Invictus and its amazing team and ethos.”
