Lee Matthews

Categories: Invictus Games 2016 Athletes

A former Airtrooper in the Army, Lee suffers Visceral Somatic Pain Syndrome which results in chronic pain in his lower back and left leg. As well as severe fatigue, loss of strength and mobility problems Lee has muscle degradation and suffers with depression, anxiety and OCD. Lee uses a wheelchair or walking aids to get around.

Lee has used sport in his recovery heavily as he takes life one day at a time. Lee says that sport, and in particular wheelchair basketball lifts him up in the dark times – he trains twice a week. He is hoping that the Invictus Games will help reinstate his self-belief. Lee is really looking forward to being “a part of something, part of a team and being around others that can relate”.  He is also looking forward to “that all important banter”. Lee knows that the Invictus Games will help him take control again and not let his illness control him.
