Categories: Invictus Games 2017 Athletes

Ex-Navy Marine Engineer Kirk, known as Spike, was medically discharged from the Navy in 2002 after contracting Meningitis in 2000 while on exercise. He has since suffered daily from Complex Regional Pain Syndrome – a nerve condition affecting his legs – and regularly uses a wheelchair. He is currently in the process of elective amputation. Kirk will be competing at the Invictus Games in wheelchair basketball, hand cycling and wheelchair tennis. He says he looks forward to the Games giving him the boost he needs for his recovery: “It would give me a positive focus on my abilities rather than my disability. To be involved in competitive sports again is a dream come true. Being treated as an equal against other Veterans on a level playing field helps with the stigma associated with disability.”
