John Hill served as a Sergeant in the British Army. Upon leaving the military, the 49-year-old from Telford found the transition challenging: “Whilst serving you always have something to focus on, something to aspire to, something to achieve. It’s all about exceeding the expectation… unfortunately, this continues with me to this day. I’m always trying to beat myself, no matter what the result.” This ambition to be the best has driven John in his sporting endeavours: “This is where I think the Invictus Games has already pushed open a new door. I want to show my wife that the last 18-years standing by me has been worth every moment and we now have some balance and normality in our lives. I want to show family and friends that their patience and understanding has not been a waste of time and their help has helped me get to this point in my life. My commitment is their commitment and I can’t think of a better way demonstrating that than by standing on the world stage representing my country, my fellow comrades and those individuals that have supported me along the journey.”
