Former Lance Corporal Joe Dillnutt served in the British Army until he was medically discharged in 2016: “When I was injured I didn't just lose my job and a lifestyle I loved, I lost my rugby team friends and independence. Being 28 and having my brother help me wash and shave was a real low point. It took me from November 2013 until 2017 before I really began to feel anything like myself again.” Now 31, the Loughborough-based sportsman found life outside the military exceptionally difficult. This all changed when his partner suggested applying for the Invictus Games: “It took a lot of persuading, but as soon as I got into the mindset of competing again and pushing myself I knew it was the right thing to be doing. I have seen a difference in myself, both mentally and physically since I began properly training.”
