For 42-year-old Army veteran Daniel Shanahan, he hopes the Invictus Games will benefit his mental health and help fight the “shame” he feels. “The Invictus Game training has allowed me to break down barriers and mix with others that have been in the same boat. It’s not what ‘I was’ anymore it’s all about what ‘I am’ and ‘what we are’ – the Invictus Games environment has allowed us to hold our heads back up and enjoy something new. I don’t feel as alone now.” Daniel wants to inspire other injured or sick veterans to come forward and use sport as the tool for recovery, just as he did. “If I can help just one person then I have fulfilled my current purpose. That what Invictus means to me.”
