Sport became an avenue for Andy to feel “normal” again after a spinal cord injury caused him reduced feeling and movement in his lower limbs and constantly left him in large amounts of pain. A former Junior Technician in the RAF, Andy is sometimes required to use a wheelchair and an unstable right shoulder frequently dislocates and means he is often unable to use his arm above shoulder level. He stated taking part in wheelchair sports five years ago and it had an immediate effect on his mental wellbeing and pain management. He no longer needs to use strong painkillers and his focus on sports means he can manage his discomfort. He credits the Invictus Games in 2014 as “changing his life” and said he “wants to carry on the journey as far as I can.”
