For Gemma, being medically discharged has been exceptionally difficult. Having served as a Sergeant, she struggled with the mental health impact of not working after working for so long. She felt as though she had lost her identity and found it hard to recover from constant rejection when applying for jobs and needing to repeat the process over and over.
To Gemma, the ongoing rejection was confirmation that if she wasn’t good enough for the Army, she wasn’t good enough to work in a mainstream job. Through the Warrior Games, she hopes to increase her self-confidence, feel pride and honour in representing her country and ‘not feel like a ghost’. Gemma said: “I want to try and be me, the old real me, to push my current limits and to see how far I can go, to not be identified by as a label or disability.”
