Since being medically discharged in 2004 with a degenerative spinal and lower limb condition Royal Navy Veteran Chris MacFadyen has struggled to maintain his physical and mental strength in remaining active. His family convinced him to take up Archery and Chris was surprised to find he could take part without too much pain. He calls it a ‘game-changer’, allowing him to participate and compete against able-bodied archers on an equal footing. Chris has had numerous surgical procedures on his spine and other areas in recent years with differing periods of recovery impacting on his ability to participate in Archery regularly. The Invictus Games gives Chris a continued positive focus having competed in Orlando 2016. He believes competing in Toronto will allow him to prove to himself that he is still fighting through his pain barrier and not letting his condition beat him.
