The Help for Heroes Research Approvals Committee
Help for Heroes has a duty of care to its beneficiaries to ensure that any research promoted is safe and that the time and effort required to support any research is likely to be proportionately beneficial to its beneficiaries and the charity. A research approval and implementation pathway has therefore been established allowing members of the Committee to consider research applications received, to either approve or reject a researcher’s proposal to access beneficiaries.
The Help for Heroes Research Approvals Committee reviews all research proposals involving Help for Heroes beneficiaries who are veterans and/or families of veterans. The Help for Heroes Research Approvals Committee cannot give approval for research involving Serving Personnel.
Research involving Serving Personnel and/or their entitled dependants must be reviewed separately by the Ministry of Defence Research Ethics Committee. For more information please see: https://www.gov.uk/government/groups/ministry-of0defence-research-ethics-committees
What do I need to do?
Complete the form above and Dr Allie Bennington, Co-Chair of the Research Approvals Committee will be in touch with you.
What happens next?
Once you have submitted your application the Co-Chair will acknowledge receipt of your application within 10 working days. You will receive an email notification when the review is complete.
How long does it take to gain approval?
There are a number of factors that impact on the time taken to hear back from the Research Approvals Committee about whether a study has been approved. These include the quality of the application, whether all the required information has been provided and the need to communicate within Help for Heroes about the study. Whilst the Committee meets 2-3 times a year, depending on the number of applications received, it may be that a research protocol will not gain approval at the first review meeting and amendments will need to be made and submitted for a second review.
Typically, it takes 3-6 months to gain approval. However, minor amendments to a protocol will only need the chairman’s action, rather than being presented to the whole committee. On such occasions the chairman of the board should consult with other board members as required.
