Last Saturday night/Sunday morning, BoB Mark Holloway completed his 4th World’s Toughest Mudder – a 24 hour extreme 5 mile obstacle course challenge in the Las Vegas desert where elite athletes aim to complete as many laps as they can in the 24 hours.
In 2011 Mark was injured in Afghanistan which gave him some permanent damage, he was lucky to recover relatively quickly which has enabled him to continue his military career. After receiving help from Help for Heroes he recognised that not all injured personnel were as lucky as him.
Mark trained relentlessly, in particular this year, the hours, weeks and months of pushing himself has been a salvation and helped him control the vicious circle of things that haunt and hinder him. After clocking up 60, 65 and 70 miles in previous years he decided nothing short of 80 miles would do – a gruelling 16 laps!
Chatting to Mark the night before the race he was worried the nerves would get the better of him and being in the shape of his life, he was ready to just get going. He duly did and at noon Las Vegas time set out on one of the most toughest 24 hours!
The first 6 hours were hard-hitting for him – stomach upset and cramping legs caused a lot of pain. The middle 12 hours he managed to get going proper, but then pulled his shoulder on two consecutive laps on the same obstacle! He thought about pulling out but somehow managed to modify how he tackled that obstacle and, as he said, “blasted through the laps”. Until the third to last where he developed severe hydration, was weak, disorientated and sick.
However from nowhere Mark showed a superhuman energy and determination to finish in style, developed a second wind and was able to complete another two laps, making 17 in total and crushing his goal to complete 85 miles!
- Mark finished 12th out of 1200
- 1st UK male
- 5th in his division (male age 30-34)
Many many congratulations to Mark on a superhuman achievement. Yesterday he said he had enjoyed a long awaited beer and could not move without making a groaning noise, but is now on his way home ready to be back at work Wednesday! We are yet to hear if he is going to go for a 5th WTM!
Thank you Mark for being an outstanding Help for Heroes Tough Mudder Ambassador and for your massive achievement!
