Ten Tips for Christmas Wellbeing

While one of the most wonderful times of the year, Christmas can also be one of the most stressful.

We asked our psychological wellbeing team for their 10 best tips for a very merry Christmas:

1. Delegate

If you are organising things for the big day, don’t be afraid to delegate. People are generally happy to help and many hands make light work.

 2. Accept that what will be, will be

The run up to Christmas day can be stressful, especially if you’re hosting. Take a deep breath and try to accept that you can’t please everyone.

 3. Manage expectations

We often feel pressure to have a ‘perfect’ Christmas and can end up disappointed. Remind yourself it is just one day.

 4. Enjoy the moment

Remember that your children will grow up… so when they wake you at 4am this too is a precious moment!

 5. Moderate

Try using relaxation techniques such as deep breathing to cope with anxiety or tension brought on by the added stresses, instead of self-medicating with alcohol.

 6. Get enough sleep

It’s a busy time of year and it’s easy to get booked up before you know it. Make sure you plan for a few early nights so you don’t burn yourself out.

 7. Understand the triggers

While you can hope for a miracle, most family tensions still exist on Christmas Day. Recognising known triggers can help. For example, if religion is a tricky topic, avoid talking about it.

 8. Get some fresh air

It can be tempting to sloth around, but get everyone out for a walk on Christmas Day - the kids, the olduns and the reluctant teenagers. Bonus points for taking a stroll in your Christmas jumpers!

 9. Switch off

Ignore images of a perfect Christmas on TV and social media. Unplug and give yourself and your loved ones the greatest gift of all – your attention. Read a Christmas story, sit and talk to your great aunt, think about others and what you can do for them.

 10. Ask for help
