Seville to Santiago de Compostela

Posted by: Help For Heroes | Categories: General

Roger Mechan is in his fifth year of solo trekking some of Spain and France's most iconic trails in support of Help for Heroes, and his home town hospice, St Luke's. Over this time Roger has walked a staggering 1400 miles, and raised an amazing £14,000.

Starting in April this year Roger will once again be ploughing his lonely furrow by trekking the 600 mile long Via de la Plata. Starting in Seville in Southern Spain, the route will head North through the wilds of Extremadura, and follow the same route used by pilgrims coming from North Africa, and finish atthe cathedral at Santiago de Compestela. Extremadura is one of Spain's most underpopulated regions with only 26 inhibitants for every square kilometre.

Roger has said of his latest adventure: 'I will see very few people for the first 400 miles of the trek, but hopefully plenty of eagles, vultures and spring flowers. On completion I will have trekked over 2000 miles for charity, hopefully pushing my charity donations over the £15,000 mark. Two weeks into the trek I will be having a lunch of goat's cheese, squid and bread under an olive tree while celebrating my 68th birthday.
