Five military athletes set off for PyeongChang on Saturday to take part in the Paralympic Inspiration Programme, an amazing partnership between Help for Heroes and the British Paralympic Association.

Veterans who have suffered a life-changing injury or illness and have since turned their attention to sport, are experiencing the Paralympics in PyeongChang to be inspired and motivated on their recovery journeys, as they aim for a future Games intheir chosen sport.

The athletes – Jen Warren, Cornelia Oosthuzien, Alex Slegg, John Huntington and Dan Sheen - are watching sport, meeting competitors and taking part in sports psychology and media workshops to prepare them for the world of performance sport.

So far, they have watched a combination of Snowboarding, Alpine skiing, Para-Nordic skiing and Curling. They have discussed how they will get the most out of the week, identified key areas to develop and learned about the differences between Paralympics and previous competition experience.

Alex Slegg said: “There’s an amazing atmosphere in PyeongChang and the Programme is definitely inspiring me on my journey to competing in 2022. It’s great to be able to watch the pinnacle of my sport, as well as learning about the mental preparation needed to be a high-performance athlete.”

On Tuesday, they got to cheer on Help for Heroes-supported Paralympian Scott Meenagh as he competed in the 12.5km sitting biathlon.

Paranordic-hopeful John Huntington said “It was amazing to watch one of my teammates, who I’ve competed alongside, achieving at a Paralympic level. He is reopening the door for British Paranordic skiers like myself. ”

Scott took part in the Paralympic Inspiration Programme in Sochi four years ago.

Over the next few days, the group are looking forward to engaging with competing athletes and getting to experience a unique environment in the Athletes’ Village.
