#philsbeard gets Rio talking

Posted by: Help For Heroes | Categories: General

Five years ago, military Paralympian Cpl Phil Eaglesham contracted Q-Fever whilst on tour with the Royal Marines in Afghanistan. Now he’s in Rio and sporting a fab beard!

The hashtag #PhilsBeard is full of people showing off their (mainly fake) beards, from reporters to supporters – everyone is getting involved - including Team H4H!

Cpl Eaglesham started the hashtag to raise awareness for mental health issues as he and his family have a constant struggle to manage the long term physical and psychological impacts of the illness, Phil grew his beard in his darkest days to help him cope and now says that it is a “visual display” for mental health

Phil is now representing Paralympics Ireland in Target Shooting, which he says has given him an outlet, as well as something positive to focus on. Phil has found that while his illness continues to decline, his shooting scores continue to improve.

“Help for Heroes have been at the forefront of helping me move my sport from a hobby to growing into a professional athlete. The support that they provide and knowing that there are genuine people out there who really want to help.”

Throughout Rio, Phil is recording a video blog every day he can, the vlogs show a rare insight into an athletes experience at the Paralympic games in real time and they are definitely worth a watch!

At Help for Heroes, we’re bearding up to show support for Phil and to help raise awareness for mental health. Get involved and show your support by taking your own #PhilsBeard photo!
