Personal Trainer course secures Lee a new career

Help for Heroes will be running a Personal Training course at Tedworth House Recovery Centre for wounded, injured and sick service personnel and Veterans. It offers a qualification and allows you to expand on any existing interests you may have around the subject, like coaching at fitness training.

The course is run in partnership with Aspire and YMCA Fit, and qualifies successful completion with an InstructAbility Diploma in Personal Training Programme

The course will consist of the following modules: Level 2 Gym Instruction, Level 3 Personal Training, Exercise and Disability, Strength & Conditioning, Work Placement and Exercise Referrals. The course will take approx. 7 weeks to complete (excluding the work placement).

Lee Patmore was discharged from the Navy in 1999 with a lower back injury and now uses his wheelchair for mobility. Lee took part in the course last year and says “I applied for the course but had mixed feelings, I didn’t think I’d be able to do it but I thought at least I’d try. The course was really good. You’re surrounded by your military family again and have a great time.”

Since passing the course, Lee is now an Inclusive Co-ordinator at Brentwood Leisure Centre in Essex and also offers gym inductions for others with disabilities – “I always had an issue finding a gym that had a disabled instructor, it’s one of the reasons I wanted to do the PT course – it helps others in wheelchairs be less nervous to become active.”

The dates are as follows:

  •  Phase 1 – 7 August – 1 September 2017
  •  Phase 2 – 20 November – 14 December 2017
