Fundraising Idea | BBQ for Heroes

Posted by: Help For Heroes | Categories: Fundraising , General , Challenges

Come rain or shine, a barbecue is a staple of a British summer, so why not dust off your apron, grab the charcoal and raise money for our Heroes? Below is a step-by-step guide to make your BBQ for Heroes a sizzling success.

  1. Get Registered

As with every event that is in support of Help for Heroes, your barbecue must be registered with us. You can do this by clicking here. Then enter your details and our lovely Supporter Care Team will be in touch to get you signed up and ready to go. Make sure to let us know if you would like to put your barbecue fundraising towards a challenge or event and we can get this all linked up for you.

  1. Spread the word

Barbecues are a fantastic social event, and you can use our downloadable invitations to get your nearest and dearest, and even the wider community, involved. We also have great editable posters you can use to advertise your event around your town to get as many people to the party as possible!

  1. Supporter Merchandise

Once you have your barbecue arranged, we can help you sprinkle that Help for Heroes magic. To get our merchandise – including bunting, balloons, banners, wristbands, collection tins and much more – call our Supporter Merchandise Team on 01725 514169 and they will place the order for you.

  1. Cook up a storm and tell us about it

On our BBQ for Heroes webpage you will find some great burger recipes that have been designed by our Band of Brothers which are great to get your teeth stuck into. We also love to see what our amazing supporters are doing to support our wounded Servicemen Personnel and Veterans, so get sharing those pictures on social media using our Twitter handle, @HelpforHeroes.

  1. Send in your amazing fundraising

Once you have eaten that last hot dog and tackled the mountain of washing up, send in your funds raised. Remember to quote your event registration number, and we will get this registered to your challenge or event.

Supporter Story | Michelle Theaker

Help for Heroes supporter Michelle Theaker organised a BBQ for Heroes event in her pub garden, The Spread Eagle in Southend-on-Sea, and invited her local community to join in with all the fun.

How did you come about running BBQ for Heroes?

“This is our second year taking part in BBQ for Heroes. Having run the pub for around 18 months, we realised how patriotic and proud our locals are of our Armed Forces and how grateful they are for the sacrifices they have made. We wanted to bring our community together to support this great cause and therefore decided BBQ for Heroes was the perfect opportunity to do this.

“As soon as the date was announced, everyone wanted to get involved. We even have a burlesque troupe and Zumba class who practise at the pub who wanted to put on a display on the day.”

In your opinion, what has been the secret to your successful fundraising?

“We gathered raffle and auction prizes from local businesses. We had a bouncy castle and lucky dip for the children and also had an appearance from Hero Bear who enjoyed having his photo taken by everyone.

“We even had a special visit from Southend Unitedfootballer, John White. The DJ we had for the day, Pete Lacey, was also superb. He played a great selection of music, taking lots of us back to our youth and he also stepped in as our compere and auctioneer for the day.”

What would you say to anyone looking to run a BBQ for Heroes event?

“All in all everyone had an amazing day, with lots of fun and laughter. We had so many compliments on how the day was organised and congratulations on the moniy raised. It’s definitely going to be an annual event for us from now on.”

A huge thank you to Michelle and everyone who attended her BBQ for Heroes for raising an incredible £1,380 for Help for Heroes!
