Former soldier Fiona running marathon in memory of friend, David Seath

Former soldier Fiona Chalmers is to take part in the Stirling Scottish Marathon to raise funds for the Captain David Seath Memorial Fund in memory of her former colleague and friend. 

David, originally from Crossgates, Fife, was competing in the 2016 London Marathon to raise funds for Help for Heroes when he collapsed just three miles short of the finish line with a cardiac arrest. Despite efforts to revive him, he died in hospital later that day, aged only 31. 

His family and friends went on to set up The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund which raises funds to support sick, injured and wounded veterans through Help for Heroes. Fundraising events including skydives, quizzes and champagne teas, together with local communities, clubs and organisations has raised almost £250,000.

Fiona, who is originally from Fortrose, near Inverness, and now lives in Stirling, said: “I want to raise money for a cause close to my heart, The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund, which is in partnership with Help for Heroes, a truly superb charity.

“I also want to keep Dave’s memory alive. Dave was a close friend of mine who was running the London Marathon to raise money for Help for Heroes, a charity he cared deeply about. Dave and I served together in 19th Regiment Royal Artillery (the Scottish Gunners). He quickly became a very close friend of mine, he had a hilarious sense of humour, an infectious smile and was always there for his friends through the highs and the lows.”

Fiona served with the Royal Artillery for eight years, including two operational tours of Afghanistan. She now who works as a project manager for HSBC and is building up her training in preparation for the 26 mile race in Stirling on 21 May.

She added: "Running a marathon is a big challenge and having run one before – the Inverness Marathon a couple of years ago - I know what I'm letting myself in for. Dave would have challenged me to beat my previous time, a sub four hour time, so I certainly have my work cut out for me. I try to do three speed sessions a week and a long distance run at the weekends, increasing the distance each time. So hopefully I'll meet my goal.

"Like Dave, I have always supported Help for Heroes, having seen first-hand the amazing work they do for our Armed Forces' injured, wounded and sick.”
