Follow in Paul’s footsteps and take on the ultimate challenge

How would you like to reach new fitness goals, have an unforgettable experience in the great outdoors and raise money for our Heroes at the same time?

Follow in the footsteps of our inspiring fundraiser Paul Collins and take on an Ultra Challenge, run by our friends at Action Challenge, in support of Help for Heroes.

Ultra Challenges are a true test of determination – especially if like Paul you choose to take on a 100km option. The challenges offer an experience like no other, with routes and distances to suit all abilities. Explore areas of outstanding natural beauty along the Cotswold Way or enjoy England’s finest sea views as part of the Isle of Wight Challenge, knowing that your efforts will help transform the lives Veterans and their families at the same time. All treks invite you to walk, jog or run at your own pace, with distances ranging from 25 – 100km.

Paul, formerly of the RAF, signed up for his first challenge in 2014 to lose weight and beat depression and enjoyed the experience so much that he’s now, in his own words “addicted!”

“I was overweight and quite depressed before I completed my first one along the South Downs Way. The buzz that I got from it and the support from other entrants was amazing. You really do experience the best of mankind, as everyone is supporting each other.”From that point, there was no stopping Paul, who quickly went on to sign up for the London to Brighton 100km challenge in 2015. Now he’s a regular ‘challenger’ – last year he completed seven, including those along the Jurassic Coast, Wye Valley and Thames Path, choosing to fundraise for Help for Heroes during three of them.

“It’s great to help a charity that supports members of our Armed Forces, which is something I am passionate about, and at the same time be able to support my own mental and physical health.

“You’ll be amazed that when challenged, your mind and body is capable of doing extraordinary things. To complete a 100k you have to put the hours into train, however, I find that little and often works really well. You just need to spend some time trialling what works for you.”

If you decide to take on the Jurassic Coast or Peak District challenge this summer you might even spot Paul along the way, as he’s already signed up to do both this year.
