First Class all the way with Virgin Trains

Posted by: Help For Heroes | Categories: General

We are delighted to announce that Virgin Trains has offered our Help for Heroes Band of Brother (BoB) members the chance to get free upgrades from Standard to First Class throughout 2015. BoB members who show their Help for Heroes issued BoB membership card along with their Standard Class ticket will be offered a seat in first class – along with up to three travelling companions – providing the space is available. Starting on 1st February, this offer comes just in time for spring.

Band of Brothers Manager Olivia Metcalfe said: “Using public transport can sometimes be very difficult for our injured or sick Service personnel or Veterans due to the issues of negotiating small spaces with prosthetic limbs or injured bodies. It can also trigger anxiety and stress. So an offer like this one, generously provided by Virgin Trains, means our heroes can travel with more ease and comfort and I know that for many of them, this will be a massive help. We sincerely thank Virgin Trains for their generosity.”

This scheme was the brain child of Virgin Trains’ John Young, a driver who is friends with a few BoB members and is very supportive of the brave men and women who sign up to serve our country. John said: “As an ex-serviceman it is an issue I am very passionate about. I’ve met lots of injured veterans through my work, some I of whom I’m fortunate to now call friends. One particular encounter last December prompted me to approach my bosses with the idea of the First Class upgrade. They had no hesitation in agreeing to the suggestion and I hope many of the BoB members will be able to take advantage of this over the coming year.”

One Bob member fully intending to is Stewart Harris: “I’d like to take the opportunity to thank Virgin Trains. People say it is the little things that make a big difference and they are right. I’ve been fortunate to travel First Class with Virgin and it was a breeze. I was able to stretch out and for the first time since my incident I was able to relax. It was great

“And this will sound a bit strange, but not long ago I travelled with a friend who is an amputee. Sitting in First Class he was able to charge his leg! Mad I know but prosthetics have come so far in recent years and need charging just like a phone or laptop now.”

Olivia continued: “In the aftermath of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan it is important to remember that for many of those who serve our country, their personal battles may only just be beginning. With the continued support of the general public and compassionate organisations like Virgin Trains, we are able to show them that they do not have to face this fight alone.”

You can check out the Virgin Trains’ routes here – their trains travel the length and breadth of the West Coast Main Line from London Euston to the West Midlands, North West and Scotland. Any BoB member who has yet to request their BoB ID card should get in touch with the BoB/BoS office by calling 01980 844280 and one will be sent out to you.
