Do you have what it takes to do the Big Battlefield Bike Ride?

Posted by: Help For Heroes | Categories: Fundraising

Are you looking for a new challenge to motivate you over the next few months? If you enjoy fitness, learning new things, meeting new people and doing your bit for a good cause, then our Big Battlefield Bike Ride (BBBR) is for you.

Our annual Help for Heroes fundraiser takes you on a 350-mile tour of Northern France, visiting several historic battle sites, including Normandy’s iconic beaches and Pegasus Bridge. Cycling alongside 200 fellow fundraisers and Veterans, you’ll share an unforgettable experience, forging new friendships, getting fit and learning more about the bravery of allied forces during the Second World War.

Simon Snell, from Devon, took part in the BBBR last year and says it was a truly humbling experience.

“Last year, I was honoured to share my experience with my eldest son Alex. I wanted him to see what sacrifices thousands of people had made and how cruel war was, but still how necessary it is to support those who fight for our freedom. I choose the BBBR as it ticks all of those boxes and the massive benefit it allows us as a father and son to do something positive.”

This year’s event will be particularly poignant as it marks the 75th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Cycling around 70 miles a day, you will be accompanied by expert war historians who will breathe life into the places you visit by sharing stories of the people who fought there and the events that took place.

“The guides were outstanding and the memorial services, even in the wind and rain, are very moving.”

As well as learning about iconic events in our nation’s history, the BBBR is also an excellent opportunity to focus on your fitness and wellbeing.

“I’d never really cycled up until I started to train for my first event in 2016. I really enjoyed the cycling and now cycle three or four times a week.

“All of my training was done alone, so being able to ride with a group was amazing and one of the main things that draws me to doing this again. It sounds a bit naff, but people you ride with drag you around when you don't want to pedal anymore.”

By taking part in the BBBR, not only will you be taking on the challenge of a lifetime, in doing so, you can make a real difference to the lives of wounded, injured and sick Veterans, Serving personnel and their families.

“You only need to cycle alongside those who have been injured both physically and/or mentally to understand why Help for Heroes is critical. As we are not at war, I think the public are sometimes unaware that troops are being medically retired every week.

“Those that were injured in modern conflict also need continuing support, their needs just don't stop. They need our support and unfortunately, in the present climate it is not provided by the state.”
