Day 1: And We're Off!

July 2014, 22 tired people made their way towards Heathrow Airport to board a flight to the USA. thBefore the sun rose on the 5

Of the 22, 19 have suffered a life-changing injury or illness whilst in service of our country and, thanks to Help for Heroes who have funded the trip, left the UK to take part in a Wheelchair Basketball and Sitting Volleyball Skills and Competition Camp alongside their allied counterparts in San Antonio Texas. Why, you might ask, well, the answer is simple – to train for the Invictus Games, which are the brain child of Prince Harry.

The week, which is just a small part of the extensive training programme being run for the Invictus Games by Help for Heroes and the MOD, will be full of hard work, fun, inspiration and good old fashioned competition. We will see our British Armed Forces hopefuls train alongside the USA’s Air Force, before taking things up a notch and having a friendly competition, which will be the perfect prelude to the – far more serious – competition at the Invictus Games in September.   Having taken a team to the Warrior Games in 2012 and 2013, Help for Heroes are proud and privileged to be supporting the MOD in the training and selection of the British Armed Forces Team.

Having supported our heroes at both a grass-roots and Paralympic level, Help for Heroes Sports Recovery know how important physical activity - and experiences such as this Sports Tour to the USA - is for encouraging confidence and independence along an individual’s road to recovery.

Please check back here daily to find out how the team are getting on in San Antonio and if you would like to send them a message of support or encouragement, please tweet @H4H_SR.

Don’t forget, you can find out more about the Invictus Games, see photos of training and find out how to buy tickets via the Invictus tab on the left.

Until tomorrow,
