April kicked off with the first Band of Sisters Respite & Relaxation weekend to be held at Chavasse VC House this year. Ten lucky Band of Sisters were treated to a weekend consisting of a chocolate making workshop, manicures, pedicures, massages, Pilates and most importantly a rest and time to meet other Band of Sisters in a similar situation to them. Friday evening was very chilled with the ladies all getting to know each other and after a couple of hours it was obvious they were all going to get along just fine! Saturday started with the chocolate workshop which turned out to be very enjoyable if a little messy. Lunch was followed by a mindfulness session for the BoS, giving them some downtime and some relaxation skills to take home with them. Saturday afternoon was all about the pampering and relaxation. Each BoS was treated to a manicure, pedicure and a massage, which were all either donated free of charge, or heavily discounted. The weekend finished with a little exercise in the shape of Pilates from Nick our regular teacher.
One of the Band of Sisters who attended said: “This is my first time away with BoS and it has been amazing. I have enjoyed every minute of it. Thank you so much.” Band of Sisters Respite weekends are available three times a year at Colchester, Tidworth and Catterick Recovery Centre.
We welcomed 25 BoB, BoS and children to the Centre for the annual Easter Egg Hunt. The Easter bunny was very kind to them, leaving an egg for each child in the Hope on the Horizon garden. They also designed and painted spring plant pots and had seeds to take away to plant when they got home. One young attendee said: “Thank you for a lovely Easter morning. So happy the Easter Bunny left me an Egg. Really enjoyed painting my flowerpot ready for planting.”
Next month I am looking forward to heading up to Lincolnshire to meet BoB and BoS in the area so any ideas of locations would be very welcome!
Midlands | Alan's update
April has passed in a blur of chocolate, football and ticket offers. What's not to love? We had almost 30 hardy souls attend the annual chocolate hunt and sausage fest which took place in woodland to the north of Telford courtesy of the brilliant Gary and Lisa Kirkpatrick. Some brilliant shelters were built by the kids, much chocolate found and quickly disposed of with a similar system employed with the sausages off the BBQ - a fun day and a huge thank you to those who came along and made some new friends.
The mighty BoB FC also had its first games in a small tournament run by the WBA Foundation, with two further dates taking place in May 4 and 17 with the later running on the Premier league pitch so dig out your shin pads, get along and show some silky skills with you fellow BoBs. It is all about having fun, being positive and laughing at me as I fall over the ball (so everybody is a winner)!
I have also been down to have a look at some adaptive rugby with Worcester Rugby so more details to follow on us getting involved with them as we move forward.
The WBA Foundation were also the generous guys who donated 25 tickets for the WBA v Southampton game which I know was enjoyed by those who used the tickets. The same with those who have taken advantage of the second round of Billy Elliot show tickets, thanks for the feedback and hopefully more to come from the fabulous lot at the Hippodrome in the coming months.
As we look forward to May, we have our massage treatments starting at the West Midlands Nail and Beauty Academy Birmingham - we still have slots available so please drop me an email if you fancy a couple of hours of pampering. We are also setting a date for a bowling evening in Derby along with a second comedy night in Hednesford on Friday 12 May and a chance to learn the art of beekeeping during the spring and summer months.
Lastly, tickets will also be available for this year’s Midlands BoB/BoS Black Tie Ball. It will take place at the Albrighton Hall Hotel near Shrewsbury, Saturday 28 October, to coincide with the H4H 10 Year Birthday of the founding of Help for Heroes. It was brilliant night last year so dig out your best clobber, clear the date and get along for what promises to be another memorable night! See you on the dance floor!Back to Bandstand
