BBBR: Day 4

Posted by Help For Heroes | Categories: General

Day 4 got off to a wet and windy start, with a good few miles of hard cycling for our riders. However, fancy dress day meant that spirits remained high and the comedy element was definitely there!

Heroes fancy dress came in many different forms – superheroes, cartoon characters, emergency services inspiring family members and lost friends were just some of the amazing outfits worn on top of Lycra today.

There was a lot of history en route as we cycled along the D-Day beaches and our Battlefield Guides worked hard to make sure everyone knew the significance of each area.

At Arromanches, the sun finally appeared which gave our Riders a much-needed boost as they headed towards Bayeux.

Here, cyclists took the time to walk around the beautiful cemetery and take a moment for reflection. One of the wonderful Mates 4 Mates veterans found the bravery, for the first time ever, to talk about his Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and to thank fundraisers for their ongoing support.

Four fundraisers laid wreaths in honour of loved ones and two minutes silence was observed.

It was a wonderfully emotional end to the day.

Fundraiser Sally Wilson laid a wreath for her Grandad and said of the Ride: “It’s a rollercoaster of 300 plus miles, but also stunning scenery and the most amazing camaraderie. I felt immensely honoured to lay a wreath today, both for the Charity and everything it stood for. Both my Grandfathers fought in the War so it was particularly special for me.”
