Anna’s inspiration for her island challenge

Posted by: Help For Heroes | Categories: Challenges , Fundraising

Our amazing fundraiser, Anna Lewis is walking all the way around the Isle of Wight this weekend in support of our Heroes.Anna is taking on the Isle of Wight challenge, an epic 106km trek along the island’s cliff tops and coastal paths. The route includes a 1906 metre climb, which is bound to mean a few sore muscles at the end!We caught up with Anna to find out what’s motivated her to dig out her walking boots. “My husband, who is a Veteran, and I have both received lots of support from Help for Heroes over the years and we wanted to give something back. My husband signed up to take part in a challenge last year, but unfortunately had to pull out at 52km – he’s limited by the injuries he sustained whilst serving. But his efforts inspired me to sign up!“For me, taking on something like this means gaining a real sense of achievement. We all go through tough times and something like this really focusses the mind.“My husband has received support from Help for Heroes with his mental health, and we’ve both gained a lot from being able to meet other families in positions similar to ours. It’s so important that I can do something to help others who have been affected by trauma that’s stemmed from serving in the Armed Forces. The fact that Help for Heroes supports the whole family, not just the individual who has served, has been amazing for us.”Anna is certainly well prepared for her weekend adventure, having squeezed in lots of training and fundraising in the run up. “I’ve trained on wet and dry ground, established which bits of kits I’ll need to carry with me, and done plenty of long walks too so that I can work out where my blisters might pop up!“To reach my fundraising target I did a collection at my local Tesco store, a bake sale at work and friends and family have been really generous and chipped in too.“Oh and I’ve got my playlist at the ready – to keep me going when I’m trekking through the early hours of the morning!”Has Anna’s story inspired you? There are plenty of other Action Challenge events taking place over the summer and we’d love for you to get involved. With routes to suit all abilities, why not set yourself a distance to cover and support our wounded at the same time?
