Have you got what it takes to tackle the toughest assault course on the planet and raise money for our Heroes at the same time?
Sign up for a Tough Mudder and prepare to do battle with the Swamp Stomp and the Cage Crawl, just like Radio X presenter Dan O’Connell. Dan is gearing up to take on a Tough Mudder Classic in May at Belvoir Castle and is here to tell us what motivated him to become a ‘Mudder’, share his training tips and explain how taking up the challenge will bring out the Hero in you.
“When I signed up for my first Tough Mudder I’d never run much before so it was a huge challenge, but one that I got so much out of.
“Training for it gave me a real sense of purpose, in the 12-week run up I had this goal to work towards. Every week I could feel myself getting fitter and that inspired me to push myself even more. I was eating well and just feeling so positive.
“We can all talk about doing this sort of stuff but in the end, you have to just get out there and commit to doing it. Signing up for something like this is a great way to achieve something for yourself and support our amazing Heroes at the same time.
“In my mind, a Hero is someone who is willing to get out there, try new things and make a positive change. The Veterans Help for Heroes supports are doing that every day, they’re pushing themselves to live life beyond illness and injury.
“You can push yourself too - get your trainers on, get out there and go for it! Even if you’ve never really run much before, a Tough Mudder is so achievable. My advice is to start training 10-12 weeks beforehand, take things slowly to start with and build yourself up to doing 5K and then 10K runs. Oh and pop on some music to get you going while you train – for me it’s all about a bit of drum n bass.
“On the day itself, even when you feel tired the sheer energy of the other runners will carry you through – there’s a real sense that you’re all in it together.
“I won’t lie – I was knackered at the end of it and I couldn’t walk for a couple of days, but the whole experience was just awesome and I wouldn’t change it – the feeling you get when you cross the finishing line is like no other."
Feeling motivated?? Sign up to take on a Tough Mudder and challenge yourself whilst supporting our Heroes. Every penny you raise will help support Veterans, Service Personnel and their families, whose lives have been affected by, or during, their service in the UK Armed Forces.
There are Tough Mudder events taking place all around the UK between now and September.
