Veteran David Hiorns has recently taken on his second trekking challenge for the charity to Angkor Wat in Cambodia. He is fundraising to give something back to the charity who have helped throughout his recovery.
David served in the Royal Navy for 5 years and was medically discharged in 2016. By sharing his story, he hopes to inspire other supporters to go out and fundraise and explains how Gift Aid can play a part in this.
"I suffered a bad injury to my hand, wrist and arm, I’ve undergone 11 operations and I’m now finally building a new life as I am a civilian again. Help for Heroes has helped me massively since being discharged, and it was my aim to help raise money to put back into a charity that has given me so much."
"I planned several events throughout the year to fundraise for the trek. As I am a personal trainer, I set up charity fitness classes to help me fundraise, and these raised about £50 each. I got everyone to pay to attend and provided Gift Aid forms so that everyone could complete this where possible meaning the charity can claim the Gift Aid".
"I attended a black-tie charity dinner, where donation envelopes were placed on the tables. These include the option to add Gift Aid which enabled guests to complete their details and in turn increased monies going directly to the charity".
"My advice when fundraising for a challenge would be to leave yourself plenty of time and really plan how you are going to do it. I set up a Just Giving page and asked all my contacts to donate via the page. This is great as there is the option to apply for Gift Aid donations through your page, which then goes directly to the charity".
"I am in the unique position of being able to tell people my story, and when supporters hear this they want to donate as they know where their money is going. When fundraising and training remind yourself why you are doing it and how others are benefiting, and it is all worth it".
