40 Veterans and Service Personnel who have suffered life-changing injuries or illnesses were selected to proudly serve their country again in the Warrior Games, a major international sports event.
The team was selected by Help for Heroes to represent the UK at the 2018 Warrior Games from 1 – 9 June in Colorado Springs. Approximately 265 service members and veterans representing teams from the Army, Marine Corps, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard and U.S. Special Operations Command (SOCOM), as well as the United Kingdom Armed Forces, Canadian Forces and the Australian Defence Force will participate in the competition.
The UK Team, which is supported and delivered by Help for Heroes, will take part in nine adaptive sports: Athletics, Archery, Cycling, Indoor Rowing, Sitting Volleyball, Shooting, Swimming, Powerlifting and Wheelchair Basketball.
Find out below how the team has been getting on so far:
Track and Field
Everyone gave it their all during the competition. Kennie Hill, Team Captain, and Tom O’Brien picked up PB’s in the Discus with many more of the team to PB behind them.
Tom Hunter took on the 400M sprint and he left nothing out there. Darren Hardy scooped two Golds in the 100M and 200M with a Warrior Games record being set in both races and Michael Bates picked up the Bronze Medal in the 200M.
Angela Fairbairn took the Silver in the Upper Shotput and a Bronze for the Upper Discus. Lucy Holt threw a 9.20m Shotput in the 5.5 Upper giving her the Gold Medal and, in the Discus, it was a Silver medal scooped to accompany the gold. Lisa Johnston took the Silver Medal for the 5.0 Seated Discus throw.
We then had a quick turnaround to get ourselves ready for the Opening Ceremony. We marched onto stage led by UK Defence Attaché Col Stewart McConnell and Team Captain Kennie Hill. Vice-Captain Tom Hunter carried the torch for the UK team with his wife Lorna looking on with such pride.
The UK team gave everything they had in the Basketball Prelims – playing each team over two days was tough and the team left nothing in the bag. Michael Bates scored a wonderful penalty and Lucy Holt has now found another sport she loves.
Unfortunately, we haven’t made it through to the medal matches but everyone enjoyed the matches.
Shooting and Powerlifting
Today we saw the shooting finals and David Dewar and Stephen Rice on the shooting line. Everyone was there to cheer them on and Stephen brought the Gold Medal home. Richard Milner supported David through his rounds with helping him load his rifle each time, we all saw the definition of teamwork.
This afternoon we have the Powerlifting competition take place. Tom O’Brien has just confirmed he will be opening at 116KG in the Super Heavyweight class with Kennie Hill, Angela Fairbairn, Chris Morley, Nigel White, Michael Bates and David Dewar also competing in their respective categories. Good luck UK Team!
