Alex's update: Northern Ireland

Although it seems like a while back now, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a very Happy New Year – I hope you all had a lovely break and enjoyed the festivities.

I would like to thank you all for making the Christmas events such a fun and memorable experience, for Phil (Veterans Clinical Advisor) and Dreda (Support Hub Key Worker) who visited from Phoenix House and I. It was lovely to catch up with so many of you – 67 of you, over 3 events to be exact!

The first activities of this year have been great and included a leisurely stroll and coffee in Antrim Caste Gardens, some painting (and lots of laughing) at our arts and crafts evening, a yummy breakfast with a great view in Coleraine, two photography group gatherings, and a spot of afternoon tea for the female BoBs in Belfast.

I hope to draw your attention to a Help for Heroes course which will be held in Belfast in Autumn 2018. ‘Compassionate Resilience’ is a class which teaches you the skills you need to become more resilient to life’s knocks, and to develop skills to become more compassionate to yourself at the times when you need it. It will take place on 5th and 6th September and 14th and 15th November, and is open to Veterans and family members. Please contact sarah.findlay@helpforheroes.org.uk to register your interest.

Finally, I am delighted to say that four Band of Brothers from Northern Ireland, have been selected to compete in the US Air Force Trials in Las Vegas. Aaron, David, Dougie and Mark will be competing in several sports, including archery and seated shotput. The guys will depart for the States at the end of February and I am sure you will join me in wishing them the best of luck.

Gerry's update: Scotland

What a busy couple of months we have had to see out the old year and welcome in the new!

Christmas Parties in The Linburn Centre, Wilkieston, Lothian and The Pearce Institute, Glasgow

A good number of BoB/BoS attended the festivities at each of the Christmas Parties where there was live music, buffet and of course Santa Bear.  Everyone had a great time and the Christmas jumpers were awesome!!

Christmas Lunch in Forres   A group of BoB/BoS met up for Christmas lunch at The Old Mill Inn in Brodie where a wonderful four course meal was served.  It was a lovely afternoon enjoyed by all.

Kids Christmas Chocolate Making and Craft Experience – Getting Gooey Chocolates in Livingston

15 children had the opportunity to get messy where chocolate pizzas were made (and eaten) plus loads of lovely chocolates created to take home in homemade decorated gift bags.   The adults had a great meet and greet at the same time with lots of cake and chat!

Meet and Greets

In January there have been Meet and Greets in Kirkcaldy, PRC in Edinburgh, Helensburgh and Falkirk – a fantastic way to meet up with BoB/BoS to meet new friends and catch up!  They are well attended and great way to have a chat and a laugh with other fellowship members.  It is also a good opportunity to find out info, ask questions and get support.

When the meet ups are in Galleries or Museums you will be able to have a look around the displays and exhibits – they are lovely places to visit.

Burns Themed Meet and Greet– Military Museum Scotland in Wilkieston, Lothian

There was lots of tartan on display and plenty of haggis, neeps and tatties when we paid our respects to Rabbie Burns!  BoB John Johnston was our magnificent piper for the day plus BoB Alex Hornall told us all about a wee sleekit, cowrin, tim’rous beastie…….    Lucy Wray was an honoured guest from Phoenix House and was put to work reading the Selkirk Grace followed by yours truly delivering an address to the haggis which will not be forgotten anytime soon!

Monthly Drop-In Clinics

The new Monthly Drop-In Clinics have been going very well in The Coming Home Centre, Glasgow on the last Friday of each month (unfortunately due to lack of numbers the Drop-In’s at The Lothian Veterans Centre have now finished but new locations are currently being arranged).

The Drop-In’s are a great opportunity to come along and see me to discuss any support issues or get information or if you fancy just popping in for a chat and saying hello?  There will be a smile and a cup of tea or coffee!

Kevin's update: North West

Happy New Year. I wish you and your family all the best for 2018. We have kicked off this year carrying on with the successful drop in clinics in different locations in the North West.

We did a great archery day in Runcorn and a model making session in Preston. It was great to see everybody trying new skills and as always, the banter was on top form.

If you need any support or have any questions, please email kevin.hartley@helpforheroes.org.uk

Has your partner joined the Band of Sisters  https://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/get-support/beneficiary-support-network/band-of-sisters/

Have you signed up for H4H Live?

Do you know of any locations in your area that could host a coffee morning/afternoon/evening? Out of the city centres, nice friendly, inviting room and good parking would be ideal. Please get in touch.
