Harri’s Update: North East

So, this March I attended the amazing 10-day Challenge trek through Cambodia with seven Band of Sisters, two Band of Brothers and 21 fundraisers. What an experience it was! The challenge covered six days of walking in some very high temperatures and even higher humidity. This trek was a once in a lifetime opportunity for everyone involved and I can certainly say it has changed lives.

We trekked through paddy fields, sandy tracks, through jungle, up hills and among some of the most spectacular scenery you will have ever seen, finally finishing the trek at Angkor Wat. It’s not very often you can say you stumbled upon a temple which looked like something out of Tomb Raider! Some of the most amazing friendships have been made on these treks and if I can say only one thing, it would be to take yourself out of your comfort zone and give it a go!

To finish off the end of the month we had a wonderful breakfast in Ripon which really was an absolute treat and a great laugh, thank you to all that made it along.

Dates for April

  • Thursday 5th April – Easter Half term at PHRC
  • Wednesday 18th April – Coffee morning at PHRC
  • Thursday 19th April – Newcastle
  • Date TBC – Sheffield

If you have applied for a get-together or event and you are unable to attend for any reason please let your Co-Ordinator know in advance.

Gerry’s Update: Scotland

Still got the snow!  This is what we got up to in March:

Meet and Greets

In March there were Meet and Greets in Kirkcaldy, Wilkieston in Lothian, Falkirk, and Edinburgh. They are a fantastic way to meet up with BoB/BoS, make new friends and catch up!  All were well attended and are a great way to have a chat and a laugh with other fellowship members.  It is also a good opportunity to find out info, ask questions and get support.

When the meetups are in galleries or museums, you will be able to have a look at the displays and exhibits. They are lovely places to visit.

Band of Sisters Meet and Greet in Debenhams, Stirling

Band of Sisters and family were invited to enjoy an afternoon having a chat whilst eating cake at the Debenhams Restaurant in Stirling last month. The kids got to do some colouring in whilst the adults had a good catch up.  It was a lovely afternoon. Everyone who attended agreed that it was a real success! Debenhams are offering more dates during the year so do watch this space…

Erskine Reid Mcewen Activity Centre – Bishopton, Renfrewshire

This superb centre provides a range of purposeful activities to veterans with a choice of classes and drop-in sessions. The sessions encourage skill sharing and development. They also help to increase your social network. In March, Band of Brothers were invited along to take part in:

  • Art Session - a great opportunity for BoBs to let their creative side loose with a choice of working with different paints or clay. There was some fantastic origami as well.
  • Indoor Games Tournament – a small number of BoBs took part in games of pool. Plus, a very entertaining game of around the clock in darts.

There will be a variety of regular classes and activities each month so do keep an eye out for the notices. Transport may be available from some areas so please contact me for information on this.

Monthly BoB/BoS Drop-In Clinics

The monthly BoB/BoS drop-in clinics have been going very well in The Coming Home Centre, Glasgow on the last Friday of each month and March was no exception.

The drop in clinics are a great opportunity to come along and see me to discuss any support issues or get information. Or, if you fancy just popping in for a chat and saying hello!  There will always be a smile - and a cup of tea or coffee.

Alex’s Update: Northern Ireland

Although we didn’t have the spring weather we were expecting (which resulted in a park walk being cancelled), March saw some really lovely, creative events taking place. We are halfway through the smartphone photography course in Bangor which will finish with an exhibition of our images after six weeks of learning some new photography skills.

The Fellowship Photography group continues to meet every Thursday and I was delighted to see 14 BoB/BoS attend the last photography studio day.  We also enjoyed a relaxing (and messy) evening of landscape painting and had a leisurely and tasty brunch in Newtownards.

Events for April and May are in planning stages- keep an eye out in your emails for whats upcoming
