The Benefits of Yoga

Tuesday 20 June 2017

Did you know that traditional beliefs suggest that yoga can give us more energy, stop cravings and even fight illness? It has some surprising benefits, and can be adapted to suit everyone.

Isn’t yoga just about stretching?

Stretches and postures are just a small part of yoga - it’s also about getting you in the right mindset to help with lots more physical and psychological benefits. They work on clearing and cleansing the body - opening up the muscles, releasing blockages and tension, much like giving your house a good clean!

So how else will I benefit?

Yoga works on the nervous system, and helps build resilience. It also:

  • Helps with cravings – Yoga is great for getting you in the right mindset to limit all sorts of things such as oversleeping, overeating, wanting to drink or smoke, or eat too much sugar.
  • Good health – Good digestion, better sleep, better organ function. Yoga breathing helps things like muscle tiredness, recovery, and injury prevention.
  • Energy  Yoga practice works to make us calmer, and gives us more energy at the same time.
  • Relaxes the mind and releases tension – Yoga encourages you to focus on your breath, which relaxes the mind and releases tension in the body.
  • Strengthens and tones the body – Yoga is a great option for “functional fitness” as your body is strengthened and stretched in positions that it is naturally in on a day-to-day basis.
  • Increases flexibility – through movement and stretch, tensions are released from the body which naturally increases flexibility.

Am I flexible enough?

Working on your flexibility when you're stiff is like working on your strength when you're weak—it's tough, but if you work at it, you'll be better for it.

Some of the postures can seem complicated or scary, but every move can be modified or simplified. You might even surprise yourself with your increased flexibility if you stick with it!

But I don't have time for yoga…

It is easy to feel that you do not have the energy or the ability, but you don't have to commit to an hour-long class – just a few minutes of yoga a day can be really helpful.

Our new series of yoga videos let you take part, whenever and wherever it suits you. So, what are you waiting for? Watch our introduction to yoga here.
