What is the Big Battlefield Bike Ride?
Big Battlefield Bike Ride (BBBR) is our iconic cycling challenge that combines military history and camaraderie in an event like no other! For over a decade, our charity bike ride has used pedal-power to raise funds to give wounded veterans the support they deserve. In 2021 our route takes us down 'The Old Front Line'; for the first time we will cycle down the whole British sector of the Western Front of the Great War. Join us and pay your respects to the heroes of the past whilst supporting our heroes of today.
Where does my money go?
We want you to know exactly where your money is going. Your total fundraising target is £2,775.
We ask you to raise the first £1,300 of this by 12 March 2021 to cover the cost of your trip. This pays for:
Transport and transfers throughout the challenge; ferry from Dover to Dunkirk, coach transfer to Ostend and Eurostar home
Accommodation (six nights, Sunday 6 June - Friday 11 June)
All meals and refreshments (including welcome dinner at Ostend on Sunday 6 June and breakfast on Saturday 12 June before return journey)
Unique history tours and ceremonial memorial events led by our own team of historians
Exclusive BBBR cycling jersey and medal!
It also pays for an experience like no other that you will remember for the rest of your life.
After meeting the costs of your trip; every penny you raise after this, up to and beyond your total fundraising target (£2,775 due by 10 September 2021), goes directly to help veterans and their families stand strong.

We cycle down the whole British sector of the Western Front of the Great War. From the the North Sea Coast, we ride through Belgian Flanders, French Flanders and Picardy down to Compiegne where the Armistice was signed; visiting the main British battlefields of 1914-18 in chronological order. En route we will pay our respects at the many memorials and cemeteries, ensuring that we include the stories of as many ancestors of those taking part in the ride as possible. This will be the definitive Western Front cycle challenge.
Cycling around 70 miles a day alongside fellow fundraisers, you’ll experience a true sense of camaraderie. What better way to honour the incredible commitment, dedication and bravery of our Armed Forces than by joining our veterans on this iconic bike ride.
Sunday 6 June – Dover to Ostend
We meet in Dover and take the ferry to Dunkirk, transferring to our hotel in Ostend for a Welcome Dinner; and a good night’s sleep to ensure our legs are well-rested for tomorrow’s efforts!
Monday 7 June – Nieuwpoort - Ypres
The first day takes us down the River Yser, with stops at Pervijze and Dixmude before arriving in the “Immortal Salient” of Ypres. In the evening we will lay wreathes at the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate.
Tuesday 8 June –Ypres – Arras
We begin the day on the fields of the 2nd Battle of Ypres. Crossing from Belgian to French Flanders we will visit other 1915 battlefields including the Aubers Ridge, Neuve Chapelle, the Indian Memorial at La Bombe and the Tunnellers Memorial at Givenchy. We will also traverse the deadly open ground of the Loos battlefield where so many British soldiers, including the Queen Mother’s brother and Kipling’s son, fell in Sept and Oct 1915.
Wednesday 9 June – Arras – Amiens
Today we'll cross the rolling chalk uplands that formed the Battlefields of the Somme. We'll visit the recently excavated double crater at Hawthorn Redoubt and the Thiepval Memorial, for a moving ceremony to pay our respects to the 73,000 soldiers who went ‘missing in action' here.
Thursday 10 June – Amiens – St Quentin
Our route takes us to sites associated with actions later in the war including the world’s first tank versus tank battle at Cachy, the Australian Memorial at Villers-Bretonneux and the vast German War Cemetery at Vermandovillers. As we cross the River Somme, we will look at the VC action at Pargny and locations of the German Spring Offensive in the Flesquieres Salient of March 1918.
Friday 11 June – St Quentin – Compiegne
The final leg takes us south to the secret site of the Paris Gun in the forest near Crepy. From here the Germans hurled shells 75 miles into the centre of Paris. Then on to the CWGC Memorial in Soissons that names the 4,000 British soldiers lost during the German offensives on the Marne and Aisne in 1918, who have no known grave. We will finish, appropriately, in the forest glade where the Armistice was signed that led to the guns falling silent on 11 November 1918.
Saturday 12 June Compiegne – London
Travel back by Eurostar to London, and wave farewell (for now) to new-found friends.
PLEASE NOTE: details of route are subject to change and will be finalised in March 2021.
