What are transferable skills?
Transferable skills are skills you already have from being in the military that can be adapted for a job in civvy street.
What kind of skills do I have?
If you’ve served in the Armed Forces, you’ll have experience with working in a team, be able to work to a plan and able to thrive in difficult situations. These are exactly the kind of skills many employers look for.
Although your new career might not involve a training exercise in a field – you’re likely to have great work ethics, ability to think on your feet and be able to remain calm under pressure.
Teamwork: You’ll be used to working in a team, taking orders or giving orders but making sure that through group efforts that the job gets done.
Leadership skills: If you can inspire and motivate a team then you have great potential to be a manager in Civvy Street too. Being able to lead and make decisions are skills that will transfer easily into lots of other careers.
Technical skills: Your new role might not include being in command an Army tank or captain of a Naval ship but may have given you qualifications for other equipment. You may have also used specialist equipment and software that will make it easier to learn others.
Communication skills: Being able to communicate clear orders and speaking respectfully to your peers and bosses will help in a new career.
Physical ability: Not all jobs in Civvy Street are behind a desk. If you have a good level of fitness then you may be suitable for more active indoor and outdoor jobs.
Organisational skills: Being able to prioritise tasks, record data, manage resources and multi-task will come in handy for most careers and something that was an everyday occurrence during your time in service.
Depending on the nature of your role in the military, you may have other skills that will help you in your future career.
