Lance Corporal Corie Mapp – Household Cavalry (Windsor, Berkshire)
Sport: Sitting Volleyball
Corie Mapp (34) was injured in 2010 by an IED blast in Afghanistan, where he lost both legs below the knee and suffered other severe injuries. Once he’d been flown back to Birmingham’s Selly Oak Hospital, he was place in an induced coma for eight days and underwent multiple surgeries.
Corie is determined and hard working, testament to these qualities is the fact that he was up and around on a prosthetics within two weeks of waking from his coma.
Corie soon discovered the restorative nature of sport, and in particular a passion and talent for Sitting Volleyball. In 2013, Help for Heroes enabled Corie to compete for the UK in America’s Warrior Games, where he was in the Sitting Volleyball Team and even found himself playing alongside HRH Prince Harry during an exhibition match. Corie is currently training and hoping to qualify for the Sitting Volleyball team for the 2016 Paralympics in Rio. Help for Heroes are supporting him in this goal through funding his training.
