Andy Newell - SUPPORT
Andy was in the Parachute Regiment for over 25 years reaching the rank of Warrant Officer Class 2 (WO2). He spent most of his career with the Pathfinders as part of 5th Airborne Brigade and finally 16 Air Assault Brigade.
He has been on many operational deployments around the world including Northern Ireland, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Iraq and Afghanistan. In July 2006, during Operation Herrick IV in Afghanistan, his right arm was totally shattered during the bitter and prolonged fighting at Musa Qala in Helmand province. Since then he has undergone extensive surgery eight times to repair his arm, been a regular at Headley Court and is still undergoing treatment at Kings College Hospital in London.
He is an ardent supporter of Help for Heroes and has sold merchandise, completed four bike rides and ran the London marathon to raise funds for the Charity.
He was introduced to Help for Heroes Team True Spirit through a friend and there the challenge of completing an Ironman was presented to him. He jumped at the chance and completed IMUK 2013 in Bolton: “Once I crossed the finish line I felt completely euphoric and never ever thought I could have achieved it, even before I was injured. It has made me realise I can still challenge and push myself which is my mantra nowadays, so much so I've signed up to do Ironman Zurich in July.”
Andy is a Patron for Help for Heroes and has been involved since the very beginning. As for being involved in Arch to Arc: “It sounded like the ultimate challenge and I don't want to miss out having a go at it. It’ll also give me immense bragging rights.”
