| THE SOLO 2,000KM WALK FOR HELP FOR HEROES | ||
During the summer of 2008 I undertook my first big solo walk in aid of Help for Heroes. It took me fifty seven blistering days to cover the 1,255 arduous miles of the "Way of St James" medieval pilgrimage route. I struggled from Geneva (via Le Puys-en-Velais) to Santiago de Compostela in North West Spain. With the help of many generous benefactors, I raised the pretty staggering sum of £68,500 for Help for Heroes. 2011 is my 50th year on planet earth, which seems like a good excuse to hit the road again in aid of the vitally important charity Help for Heroes. This time, I shall walk a greater distance that includes negotiating the Alps! It is my intention, hopefully with your wonderful help, to raise a MINIMUM of £100,000 (One computerised prosthetic leg costs £20,000!!) for Help for Heroes by walking 2,000kms (1,360.75 miles) from London to Rome following the Via Francigena medieval pilgrimage route. I depart St Paul's Cathedral at 8:30am on Thursday 7th July 2011.
Click the map to see the route in detail . . . The route will travel via Canterbury Cathedral, Reims, Lausanne, the Alps and Siena. I would love to hear from anyone who might be able to give me a free bed for the night en-route: .
Although we have mercifully pulled our troops from Iraq, those many British troops that were badly wounded in the Gulf will still need our extra help for years to come. As we know all too well, our brave and For decades after we withdraw from Afghanistan, as with Iraq, our brave wounded are going to need the extra assistance provided by Help for Heroes. Please support my solo fundraising venture. By supporting this Solo 2,000km walk from London to Rome, you will be ensuring a much better future for the many physically and mentally maimed young British soldiers, to whom we owe such a great and not to be forgotten debt of gratitude. This 2,000km (1,360.75 miles) walk is not a walking holiday and it will take nearly three footsore and joint aching months to complete. It is going to be very tough on my half century old bones. I will be walking an average of twenty three miles per day in heat with about twenty kilos on my back. There will be very few rest days, as I have to get back to the UK to earn a living. I intend to do very little pre-walk training. Jogging and gymnasiums are anathema to me. I rather prescribe to the traditional British notion of glorious amateurism, by simply turning up on the day and jolly well getting on with it. A message from Andrew Bruce:
predominantly very young warriors are still fighting a vicious war in Afghanistan. On a weekly basis, very badly wounded and horrendously maimed British soldiers are being repatriated to the UK. This is sadly no longer very newsworthy, but tragically, it is the reality none the less.
