Veteran Advice: Am I drinking too much?

Many of us like a drink at the end of a long day, or when we’re socialising with friends or celebrating a special occasion. Every so often, it’s good to check in with ourselves and have a realistic look at our drinking.

Research suggests that alcohol-related problems are more common amongst Veterans and in the military community than with people from other walks of life, so here are some easy to follow steps to help make sure you have a healthy attitude to drinking.

It’s long been debated ‘how much is too much?’ when it comes to alcohol. There is a lot of guidance available about units of alcohol and the physical and mental health concerns of drinking. However, these four “CAGE” questions are a quick and easy way to find out a bit more about your relationship with alcohol:

Have you ever been Concerned by your drinking?

Has Anyone else been concerned by your drinking?

Has drinking ever Got you in to trouble?

Have you ever felt in need of an Eye opener (a drink first thing in the morning to steady your nerves or get rid of a hangover)?

If you answered ‘yes’ to one of these questions, your drinking may be a problem. If you answered ‘yes’ to more than two questions, it’s likely that alcohol either is, or could have been, an issue in your life.
