Cayle Royce, Paddy Gallagher, Nigel Rogoff  and Lee Spencer - collectively referred to as ‘The Nutters’ - are the first all-amputee crew to tackle the ‘World’s toughest boat race’.  3,000 nautical miles from Gomera in the Channel Islands to Antigua, taking anywhere between 40-90 days, unassisted and at the mercy of the elements.

You will not be surprised to hear they have named thier boat 'Legless'! They will be tweeting news live from the boat @leglessrowers

This is the third Row2Recovery crew to enter this formidible challenge. Both the previous crews completed the challenge, overcoming near disasters on the way and keeping us all glued to the news feeds. Cayle was a member of the 2013/14 crew which came 3rd in the overall race, beating 13 other international crews, despite the boat capsizing at one point and Cayle being thrown into the ocean. And he is back for more and leading the team this year!

Renowned for its tough conditions, participants typically row two hours on, two hours off, 24 hours per day. Competitors burn around 8,000 calories daily and lose roughly 20% of their body weight over the duration of the race. The 2011/12 crew was beset with horrendous physical, mental and technical difficulties which saw the crew forced onto emergency rations for 17 days when their water purifier broke. One crew member – above-knee amputee Rory Mackenzie – spent Christmas Day extracting pieces of shrapnel from his buttock as the exertion of the gruelling challenge almost proved too much.

They are raising funds for H4H, Blesma, the Endeavour Fund and Row2Recovery’s own adaptive rowing programme. You can donate via the Row2Recovery website or at Virgin Giving.
