On Wednesday 3 September, Blue Arrow hosted a Bear-B-Q in aid of Help for Heroes at Capability Green.
The day dawned dull and gloomy but by the time the cakes and tombola were laid out in the meeting room, the clouds had broken and the sun was peeking through; a good omen for the BBQ later in the day. At 10am the first wave of customers descended on the cake and the room was buzzing as people had to decide whether to take chocolate, Victoria sponge, or carrot cake.
Local H4H representative, Mark Fairclough helped look after the tombola and proved to be a great salesman with "everyone a winner… well those tickets ending in a five or a zero". There were shrieks of laughter from the person winning the tinned pears to oohs and aahs from those that won the wine or champagne. The tombola prizes were donated by people in the building so thanks must go to them for their generosity.
The chef for the day was Richard, who works via the Luton branch of Blue Arrow and kindly donated his time. He manned the BBQ and did an excellent job keeping up with the demand for burgers or veggie burgers.
RAF Bear was present - he made sure all those queuing for their lunch were in good spirits and did a grand tour of the building to encourage people to make a small donation or remind them that the BBQ was on offer downstairs. Thanks RAF bear, you did a great job on such a warm day.
The day wound down by 3pm. The few remaining tombola gifts were put away for next time and the remaining cake was sold off to the highest bidder. The collection was counted and came to a fantastic final total of £545!
