Northern Flyer Hero Ride - Day 2

Northern Flyer Hero Ride - Day 2

Burton on Trent to Northampton – 77 miles

After a good night’s sleep to recover from the undulations of yesterday someone was looking rather more refreshed than most after a night in the Premier Inn honeymoon suite - don’t worry about the rest of us Spencer we’re fine - our plucky Northern Flyers set off for the National Arboretum following a hearty breakfast.  All the riders gathered at the war memorial to pay their respects to the fallen on the 70th anniversary of D-day.  A wreath was laid by our own Band of Brother Jamie Hull and the exhortation was read by our oldest rider, Dave George (aged 67).  The riders took a few moments to gather their thoughts before the next stage of their journey.

They set off in the glorious sunshine and all made good time stretching their legs on the slightly easier terrain to our first water stop, The Cock Inn at Sibson where the wonderful staff and customers welcomed us and very generously gave a donation. We also had a donation given to one of the riders from Wayne Herbert of Leicester Forest Cyclists – always great to get support from fellow riders!  After a quick refuel with snacks and treats (including some from our secret stash of chocolate naughtiness) and a fresh coat of sun cream they headed off again.

Colin the Cockerel update:  Poor Colin had to accompany H4H Staff Lead Steve Parker after he was involved in a minor skirmish with his van and our lovely medic Rich (see pic below). After Rich called himself for medical assistance and declared himself fit for duty, Steve was sent to his van to think about what he’d done!  Last night we also awarded our first Hero of the Day award to Vicky for sheer determination and refusing to let those hills beat her.

Lunch was a delicious spread at the Gilmorton Village Hall where we were visited by a member of staff from the Gilmorton Village Store who gave us a huge bag of coins that they’d collected over the year! Many thanks!

In the afternoon it was fast, it was hot, it was great fun… just like our Northern Flyers!  There were some long slow hills but also few cheeky ones thrown in.

Everyone arrived with big smiles at the last water stop of the day aka ‘The Dolly Parton Water Stop’.  However we saw some jealous behaviour from some of the chaps who, no doubt inspired by Dolly (and Rebecca), decided they needed to be a little more glamorous!

The day ended at the Hilton hotel in Northampton where we had dinner, swapped stories and toasted fallen comrades. What a wonderful way to end a fantastic day.
