We are pleased to announce that Ben Collins, better known as ‘The Stig’ from BBC's internationally acclaimed Top Gear TV Show has agreed to be the patron for the H4H 4x4 European Rally. The rally is organised by Keith Bowen and his son, Tim Price-Bowen and is a touring assembly following the path of the Allied Invasion through Europe taking particular interest in the activities of the 101st Airborne Division.
Ben, who has been a great supporter of Help for Heroes since his days as The Stig when he took members of the Band of Brothers around a race track, is delighted to be the patron for the rally and says: “I am delighted, honoured and privileged to be asked to be The Patron of The H4H European Rally 2014. I never fail to be amazed by the sheer grit and determination of our forces and what they can achieve both on and off the battlefield. I have had the honour of meeting many of our Wounded Servicemen and Women over the last 6 years and am always humbled by what they achieve. Like the rest of the country, have nothing but admiration for them and will do all I can to support them”
The first rally took place in 2010 with the aim of taking 20 vehicles across Europe and raising £20,000. In fact they were overwhelmed with the interest shown, and the rally set of with 45 cars and raised a staggering £122,000! Such was the success of the event that they were ‘encouraged’ to run the rally in 2011and it has since continued to become an annual affair. An incredible £700,000 has been raised by the rally participants to date.
The 2014 rally will be a poignant one in terms of our military history as commemorations take place for the Centenary of the Start of WW1 and the 70th Anniversary of D-Day as well as Operation Market Garden. The rally experience is part military history tour (including museums etc.), fun activities, part off-road driving and part club-type social, open to road-legal 4×4 vehicles. The whole focus is the raising of funds for the event’s chosen charity, Help for Heroes. A maximum of 45 cars crewed by serving British & US military (some just back from Afghanistan), ex-service personnel, civilians and families with children take part.
